MLM How-To: The Four Types Of Distributors

If you remember your Psychology 101, there are 4 basic personality types; sanguine, phlegmatic, melancholy, and choleric. In other words, people are either open or self-contained, and either indirect or direct. They’re also called intuitives, thinkers, feelers, or judges.

The personality types describe people, and they also can help you determine the types of distributors they’ll be. You can use this information to communicate with them in the most effective way. The worst thing you can do is to try and change a person’s personality type into another, or to make all people behave the same. All of them are perfect just the way they are. Teach them to use their personalities well and we’ll all be successful.

Phlegmatic personalities are soft and gentle. They make good teachers, parents, counselors, or care givers. They’re dependable team players who place everyone’s needs ahead of themselves. They hate pushy people and if you try to “sell” them, you turn them off.

Cholerics are CEOs, lawyers, or itinerant preachers. With them, it’s, “My way or the highway”. They’re loud, forceful, goal-oriented and intense. Don’t try to tell them anything they don’t agree with, you’ll just tick them off.

Sanguines just want to have fun. They’re salesman or karaoke singers (even if they can’t sing). They’re the most popular and enthusiastic promoters you can have, but they’re lost on the details. They’re “big picture” only. Trouble is, they’re usually out of focus--- doing ten things at once, and none of them very well. Get them focused and you’ve got a powerhouse on your hands.

Melancholies are accountants, professors, accountants, or engineers. They’re about details, details, and more details. They bore average people. They tend to overanalyze. Slow to make a decision, they need more info. But if they ever commit to something, they’ll never, never quit.

When you’re talking with people, listen to them, and not just their words. Check out the way they’re speaking also. They’re either open, self-contained, direct, or indirect. If they’re open and direct, they’re sanguine. If they’re direct but self-contained, they’re choleric. Open but self-contained people are phlegmatic. Self-contained, indirect people are melancholies.
