How MLM Is Like Pro Wrestling

Multilevel marketing, or MLM, is like pro wrestling. It has a small group of BIG fans. People who don't know a lot about it think it's fake. But it's not fake to those of us who love it.

We get into MLM because we like the product and we want to make money. (Sometimes, the money IS the product. Bad news, but I'll save that for a future post.)

MLM is the only business I know of where people expect immediate profit. Every other kind of business requires a period of time, sometimes years, before it's profitable.

In MLM, you can break even and get positive cash flow within months, but some people quit within weeks.

Rather than making promises of quick cash, why don't companies prepare you for a realistic break-even period?

It's because most of them are designed to pay short-term fast money, and the long-term commissions are so small that most people can't realistically build a business big enough to make a living.

So if you're trying (but failing) to build an MLM downline, it's probably not your fault--- the business is just working against you. That's why a few people in any company always seem to be making most of the money.

Make sense?

Here's what the perfect MLM business has:

Unknown to the general public. It's like a well-kept secret. Most people have never even heard of it. Mainly because they're not interested.

Part-time pay plan. 9 out of 10 people in the industry are part-time. But 10%-15% of its participants make 85%-90% of the money. The perfect MLM business only has full-time distributors, or has a part-time way for you to make full time money.

Cool, intelligent people. Let's face it, we're the cool kids in class. We're leaders, not followers. Most people are simply not cool enough to get with us.

Email, IM, texting, podcasting, and blogging. That's how we roll. Cool people are 'way too busy for endless meetings and conference calls. We have them, but they're rare. We're all over My Space and Facebook. And we have a blog.

Insiders only. There are two kinds of people in MLM: those who "get it", and those who don't. Outsiders will waste time with anybody who has a pulse; the perfect MLM business looks like a fraternity/sorority of just people who "get it".

Small, unique group. Everybody can be a prospect, but few people will. So the perfect MLM business pays you enough money to build small groups of enthusiastic fans, like the ones for pro wrestling or NASCAR.
